In Elizabethan England, women were seen as the chattels of men – yet the woman who sat on the throne was hailed as one of the greatest rulers of history. No actresses appeared on the stage – yet Shakespeare’s plays contain some of the greatest female roles ever written. This unique open-air presentation, designed to complement our 2008 playbill, uses drama, song, dance and more to explore the many-faceted and sometimes paradoxical role of women in Shakespeare’s world.
